Meet Scream, Rusty & King Tut: Arizona's Friendliest Reptile Ambassadors
Every Arizona Reptiles Education presentation has three very important stars. They don't need a microphone or a script. They just show up, be themselves, and leave every room full of wide-eyed, fascinated kids.
Meet Scream, Rusty, and King Tut — our ambassador animals and the heart of everything we do.
Scream — The Ball Python Who Loves the Spotlight
Scream is a ball python, one of the most popular pet snakes in the world — and it's easy to see why. Ball pythons are known for their calm, docile temperament, and Scream is no exception. He's gentle, curious, and completely at ease being handled by kids of all ages.
Ball pythons can live for 30 years or more, they get their name from their defensive behavior of curling into a tight ball, and they're completely harmless to humans. Scream is usually the first ambassador kids meet, and he has a way of instantly dissolving any nervousness in the room.
Rusty — The Teenage Red Tail Boa With a Big Personality
Rusty is a red tail boa, and at his age, he's got the energy and curiosity to match. Red tail boas are native to Central and South America and are known for their striking coloration — those warm brown and rust-colored patterns are what give them their name.
They're one of the largest snake species in the Americas, highly intelligent, and can recognize their handlers over time. Rusty is still growing — adult red tail boas can reach 8–10 feet in length. He tends to be the crowd favorite at birthday parties.
King Tut — The California King Snake Who Rules Every Room
King Tut is a California King Snake, and he lives up to his regal name. King snakes are native to North America and are found right here in Arizona — which makes King Tut a particularly meaningful ambassador for local wildlife education.
King snakes are immune to rattlesnake venom — they actually prey on rattlesnakes in the wild. Their bold black-and-white banding is a form of mimicry, resembling venomous coral snakes to deter predators. King Tut is the one that gets the most 'wait, really?!' reactions when we share his rattlesnake immunity.
Three Ambassadors, One Mission
Scream, Rusty, and King Tut aren't just animals — they're educators. Every time they meet a new group of kids, they're doing the work of changing minds and building connections between people and the natural world. That's been our mission at Arizona Reptiles Education for over 30 years, and these three make it possible every single time.
